THDCIL has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh on 30.12.2023 for the execution of 1200 MW Kalai-II Hydroelectric Project located in Anjaw District of Arunachal Pradesh.

 

The 1200 MW Kalai-II H.E. Project envisages run of the river scheme with pondage on Lohit River, a left bank tributary of Brahmaputra River, in district Anjaw, Arunachal Pradesh. The objective is to utilize flows of Lohit River over large head available for hydro power generation.

 

The Gross and Live Storage of the Kalai-II reservoir are 318.88 M cum and 29.76 M cum with FRL at El 904.80 m and MDDL at El 900.00 m respectively. The dam on river Lohit shall be concrete gravity dam with spillway and a separate diversion structure for diverting a regulated discharge of 1128.06 cumec through 5 nos. 7.5m dia & 1 no. 8.5m dia Head Race Tunnels.

 

The powerhouse shall be underground with a capacity of (6 x 190 + 60) 1200 MW located on the right bank of the river. The total land required for the project is 869.3503 ha., and the entire land to be acquired for the project is forest land.

 

The EIA-EMP of the project has been prepared during 2024-2025 through consultant agency M/s WAPCOS India Ltd. in line with Terms of Reference (ToR) accorded by MoEF&CC. GoI. The Public Hearing for the project got conducted successfully during August 2025, and the Environmental Clearance (EC) of the project has been recommended by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC). EC is expected shortly.
